THE GOLDEN AGE by Kerrie Christensen

Solomon came to the throne at the very tender age of eighteen.

The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream one night and said to him, ‘Ask what I shall give you.’ To which Solomon replied, ‘Give your servant an understanding mind and a hearing heart,’ or as one translation puts it, ‘a heart that listens.’ I like that. A heart that listens.

The Lord was very pleased with Solomon’s request and promised to grant him riches, honor and long life also. In fact, He even goes so far as to say that there would be none other to equal Solomon either before or after. That’s quite a statement! This came to pass within Solomon’s era and it became known as ‘The Golden Age’, because never before had the Hebrew monarchy known such glory and splendor.

God gave Solomon so much wisdom, understanding and breadth of mind, that it was perfectly natural to
liken his wisdom to the grains of sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom excelled all the great men of his day: Ethan, grandson of the patriarch Judah, a levite and singer, Herman, chief of the temple musicians and the King’s seers, and Calcol and Darda, who were skilled in poetry and music. Solomon’s wisdom excelled them all, and his fame spread throughout the nations all around him.

The wisdom of the Lord in Solomon’s heart must have flowed like a river.

He penned three thousand proverbs, which contained instruction on how to live a Godly life. Proverbs are wisdom distilled into short, sharp phrases, dramatic contrasts and unforgettable scenes from life, and they each have their foundation in the wisdom of the Lord. They are often
metaphorical, which means they are figurative and not literal, and they are often enigmatical, which means they are composed intentionally with
obscure metaphors to challenge the ability of the reader to discover their hidden wisdom.1

In other words, proverbs were written to provoke the hearer to deeper contemplation of the treasure hidden with them. The truths contained in proverbs were often clothed in symbolism springing from everyday life. They were meant to entreat the hearer to dig a little deeper to uncover truth. That Solomon could pen three thousand proverbs is testimony to the fact that he was a well-spring of the Lord’s life! The wisdom that he carried was released to bring blessing to all the nations around about him.

Solomon also penned one thousand and five songs in his lifetime, with most commentators believing that Psalm 72, Psalm 127 and the Song of Solomon are among them.

He is also the identified author of the book of Ecclesiastes, penning unforgettable phrases such as this:

‘Remember your Creator earnestly now before the silver cord is snapped apart, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.’ Or this: ‘Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.’

That Solomon was a wise man is an undisputed fact. And his wisdom was not confined to literary works alone. He spoke of trees, beasts, birds, creeping things and fish and many came from all around to listen to him.

His wisdom can also be seen in the many architectural works that he designed and built. He built the temple in Jerusalem as a permanent abode for the Ark of the Covenant. He built the Royal Palace on Ophel in Central Jerusalem, also known as The House of the Forest of Lebanon, the Porch of Pillars, the Hall of Judgement, also known as the Throneroom, and the King’s Gate, from where he administered justice and heard his people. The palace that he built became renowned for its grace and beauty.

He built Millo, a fortification for the defence of the city of David,
possessing a line of ramparts all around it, along with many other fortifications in various strategic places. Tadmor in the Syrian wilderness was one of these which became a commercial depot and military outpost. He built the store cities of Hamath. Hamath is now an important agricultural and industrial centre in Syria. He rebuilt and strengthened Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer in Israel.

Solomon was a wise King and judge who wrote literary masterpieces and designed architectural pieces that were works of art, because the wisdom of the Lord was found in him.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, as you can probably tell! I have been reminded again, through Solomon’s life, of the gravity of
asking for Godly wisdom and the tragedy of straying far from it. The bookof Proverbs tells us that Godly wisdom will keep, defend and protect us. It will exalt, promote and bring honor to our lives, imparting the grace and glory of God. Who wouldn’t want to ask the Lord for more wisdom?

I believe we have access today to a rich treasury of God’s wisdom that can flow into the arts, business, education, or just about any stream of life that you want to think about. My passion lies in the area of literature and the arts. But where does your passion lie? Where do the tributaries of God’s wisdom flow through you? The wisdom of God knows no bounds. His streams are always flowing. There’s no recession going on in the courts of heaven today. His wisdom abounds to bless the nations.

Jim Goll wrote a beautiful prayer that is a paraphrase of Ephesians 1:17-20. I’d like to leave you with this today. Be blessed as you continue drawing from the river of life!

‘Father, my desire is that You give me the Spirit of wisdom, the precious fear of the Lord. I call forth the spirit of revelation on my life. I welcome the fullness of Your Holy Spirit. Grant this to me that I might be enabled supernaturally to know Jesus intimately. Grace me with Your presence so that I may know You beyond informational knowledge.

I want to know You, Lord, just as I am known by You. Now I ask that you open the lens of my heart as You thrust forth shafts of revelatory light into my inner being. Fill my heart with Your glorious presence so that I can know the hope the positive expectation of good - of Your calling, purposes and destiny in my life. Grace me so that I may be in touch with the rich deposit of Your glorious
inheritance placed within me, as I am now a temple of the Holy Spirit. I declare that there will be many deposits and withdrawals out of this treasure chest.

I also pray that Your light, O God will flood my being so that I may know and experience the surpassing greatness of Your power toward me. Make me into a believing believer. I call this forth for the honor and glory of Your great name in the earth. Amen.
